Moose Watch is a real-time location based application bringing awareness to recent moose sightings on Newfoundland and Labrador roads and highways through Twitter messages with the special tag line #moosewatchnl.
Moose are a major problem in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has estimated that there are between 450 and 700 moose collisions each year and approximately two moose accidents each day. Too many of these collisions have resulted in fatalities. Families are left to cope with the loss of loved one, while the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador are left facing millions of dollars in health care and Transportation and Works costs. As a result, the public has spoken and the pressure is on to find a solution.
Moose Watch aims to enhance public awareness of moose sightings in order to alert motorists to potential dangers. By alerting the motoring public of current moose sightings and their locations, Moose Watch hopes to instill an increased sense of attention and caution in those traveling our highways, as a preventative measure to reduce moose accidents.
Moose Watch gives you access to:
- A Visual Map of Newfoundland and Labrador
- Mapped Location Points for Recent Moose Sightings
- Location Pins Showing the Time and Location of the Moose Sighting
- A Twitter Timeline Showing Public Moose Sighting Reports*
* Sightings are reported using Twitter and the special tag line #moosewatchnl

How to Report a Moose Sighting
Anyone with a Twitter account can report a moose sighting:
·         Open your Twitter App, or go to www.twitter.com
·         Begin a new tweet message and enter the moose sighting detail*. You must include #moosewatchnl in your message for the information to appear on the App.
·         If you are currently at or near the moose’s location, you can allow a location-based tweet, so your sighting will be pinned on the map.
·         If you are not currently at or near the moose’s location but want to share a moose sighting, do not enable the location option on your Twitter message; doing so will plot a moose sighting on the map for whatever current location you are in- even your own home!

Moose Watch is a way for the Newfoundland and Labrador public to share their moose sightings with each other in an effort to raise awareness and prevent accidents. By providing an application dedicated to moose sightings and locations, Moose Watch can be used to alert motorists to be safe as they travel our beautiful province.
